A Great Birthday for a Great Father

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 1:23 pm
by BasketGirl

Every year, when my dad’s birthday comes around, my family faces the same question: what do we get him for his birthday? I can count on my mom, brother and sister to drop hints, but my dad never helps us out at all with that. We looked through stores and catalogs and just couldn’t find anything that seemed right for him, until we heard about this golf tournament that included a chance to play with past PGA pros!

What did we do? We signed him up. He never saw this coming. My father lives for golf. Every day he is out on the green putting. Everyday he is watching it on television. Everyday he is practicing his chipping and working on ?breaking? in his driver. I think it?s an addiction.

The day of the tournament rolls around, and he and his friends are having a great time playing. It’s an all day event; the tournament itself was followed by dinner and an auction. They enjoyed the fantastic food at the dinner; he seemed so happy and grateful for such a special gift. My mother wasn’t as thrilled with the dinner itself as my dad was, but she got her fill at the dessert table. I know she had two pieces of cake PLUS a slice of cheesecake; she said it was all so tempting!

After dinner, Mom and Dad went to check out what was available in the silent auction. There were several items available in the silent auction, plus you could check out all the different things that were going to be up for bid in the traditional auction.

Dad placed a few silent auction bids. He was hoping to win an autographed picture of one of his favorite sports figures, some shirts and a few other items. He also found a string trimmer that he thought would come in handy for an additional property he owns. He was so excited after bidding; it was as if he’d already won the items!

My mother does the same as my father, except she looks at the gift baskets. From what she said, the auction had so many different gift baskets to choose from. She was looking for a special gift to give my father, for his upcoming birthday and for Christmas. She looked at wine gift baskets and found a basket full of assorted meats and wines. She bid on several of them, so that she could give them to family relatives during the Christmas holidays. I think it was a good strategy for the value.

The real auction starts and the auctioneer comes forward to give the prizes to the highest bidders on the silent auction. The prize my mother bid on in the beginning was finally hers. Once all the high bidders are done collecting their prizes, the real auction starts. The weed whacker is the first thing to be auctioned off. My father decided to bid on it, but he only did it to get the ball rolling. The auctioneer decided to bid on it and won it for himself since dad did not bid any higher. My father really thought he had a chance of winning so he became bummed. In the end is all about having a good times with your friends and I’m glad that is the way it turned out.

Making Family Christmas Gift Baskets - A Primer

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 12:51 pm
by Laurie Geerlings

Holiday Gift baskets are fun to create and are a great gift for family and friends. You can make your own basket easily and inexpensively. You select the items and the budget, keeping the receivers personality in mind. A personalized gift shows loving thought and can make a memory that lasts for a life time.

There are many types of containers available for your use. Inexpensive baskets purchased from the dollar store work well, or you can show your individual style by using unusual items. Popcorn tins, flower pots, beach pails, dutch ovens, or other small pans can fit into your over-all theme. You are limited only by your own imagination.

There are many different directions you can choose to go with your basket. Food seems to be one of the most popular and always a safe choice. When we think of the holidays, we imagine lots of yummy treats. Do not limit yourself to only the fruit baskets. Be creative by using muffins, decadent chocolates, or flavored hot cocoa mixes. There is an overwhelming amount of choices out there. Remember you also do not have to limit yourself to only one product either. You can nicely mix and match while keeping in mind your recipients likes and dislikes.

When finalizing the design of the basket, you can use a few different items to add a touch of design class to the items to make the contents look more festive. Many people use colorful seasonal ribbons and crepe papers to line the bottom of the baskets to make the items within look better. A colorful wrap around the basket, whether you use a shrink wrap to seal the contents or some other material to cover the outside, can also add some charm to the gift basket.

Baskets given as holiday presents can be colored to reflect the recipient and not necessarily have the typical red and green or white and blue color schemes associated with the season. If the recipient has a favorite color scheme, that can be reflected in the contents and the adornments on the basket. If the basket is being made as a corporate offering, the colors can reflect a company’s logo colors.

Baskets are used as a common holiday gift idea by businesses and individuals alike looking for a creative and unique way to tie together items and ideas into one seasonal present for their customers or recipients. Many companies looking to show special appreciation to employees who have worked extra hard and have been successful for the year use baskets as a great way to reward those workers.

The holidays do not need to cost a fortune. You can create memories to last a lifetime for family and friends. Your own artistic ability can be showcased in the baskets you create. Each basket can be personalized for the person receiving it and provide a theme that fits in with their own personality. Enjoy creating your unique Christmas presents this year.

Specious Animals Acceptable During Garden Wedding

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 12:32 pm
by Jerry Blackburn

The one time you do not want to see any specious flowers or plants is during a garden wedding. Even as it is true that wedding planners are notorious for their use of these fake flora in order to bring to the forefront a certain mood or ambiance, within the confines of a beautiful garden wedding, these kinds of decorations should be avoided.

At the very heart of a nature setting is of course the purity of the elements as well as the purity of the emotions it evokes. Unadulterated love is being celebrated at this kind of outdoor marriage celebration and the clean air, the scents of the flowers, and the gentle rustling of the breeze in the tree tops makes for the ideal backdrop to this kind of occasion.

As a wedding planner you wish to ensure to preserve the integrity of the nature theme while at the same time working within the confines of the budget concerns your client couple may have as well as the available locations. Another thing to consider when planning a garden wedding is of course the weather. While many understand that a November garden wedding is ill advised ? no matter where in the country you reside ? because of the possibility of inclement weather, it is also true that with a bit finesse you will be able to present the kind of venue to your clients that comes close to the garden without actually being located out of doors.

Make yourself aware of local venues related to horticulture. These may include private rooftop gardens, large greenhouses, municipal conservatories, an enclosed portion of an arboretum, and a host of other locales where the outdoors are conveniently moved inside. Of course, if the weather cooperates, then the perfect nature themed wedding will be the garden celebration during the late morning or early evening hours when the sunlight is soft and the flowers are opened.

If you are outdoors, ensure that a rented canopy or tent is at hand and may be unrolled within seconds to cover the bridal party and the guests in case of a rainstorm. Furthermore, the wise wedding planner knows the local fauna as well as flora, and will carry ant spray, wasp repellent and also mosquito candles as a matter of necessity during such weddings.

Integrate the color scheme of the venue where the nuptials are being held and ensure that the flowers you will see during the ceremony may have their likenesses found on the cake as well. Some couples may wish to incorporate animals into their themed wedding and while this may make for a stunning ambiance it is wise to discourage this notion. Children present may seek to interact with the animals in ways that are not appropriate and if the reception is to take place in the same venue, the possibility of the animals ingesting food they are not permitted to eat is great. It is best to rely on just flora and other props for ambiance.

All about indoor gardening during winter

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 8:14 pm
by Bryan Perry

Every gardener waits patiently for the time of the year when they can sit and chalk out the plans for the following years garden. It is usually in the winter that such plans need to be made, since summer is the best season for outdoor gardening. But if you think that your green fingers are raring to go and get some activity even in the winter months, you can go for winter indoor gardening. Before you embark upon indoor gardening, you need to have certain things ready. The gardening equipment that you need will need to be selected and ordered for light requirements.

when it comes to gardening, the primary requirement are that of light. One needs to monitor the amount of light coming in. The light, however, must be adequate for all the plants. The basic problem is that during winter, the days are shorter, which means that the amount of light that your plants will get will require very careful monitoring so that every plant gets optimum sunlight. Although many gardeners use incandescent light, high intensity discharge lamps or halogen lights, you must remember that there is nothing better than sunlight. Try to give your plants the best of whatever light is available. For the extra light, you can rely on indoor gardening equipment.

Water Or Earth You can grow your indoor garden in two ways. You can either use soil, that is good old mother earth for the plant or you can use special water that has all the added nutrients in it. The indoor gardening equipment that you will need depends upon the system that you use. In case you want your indoor gardening endeavor to be one that is soil free, you have to go for hydroponics or soil less systems. Although this system is somewhat difficult, especially in comparison to the usual technique, it is not something impossible. There are numerous hydroponics kits available in the market and you can order one whenever you want. For the gardening enthusiast, hydroponics is a very intriguing field and winter is a great time to learn a lot about it and actually put it to practice through indoor gardening.

In case you want to use seeds in your indoor garden and cultivate them in such a way that you can transplant it outdoors later, you can go for jiffy peat cups or seedling starter kits. The best thing about these kits is that they allow you to get through the whole process without creating much of a mess. And when you want, you can take the whole of the peat pot and transfer it outside. There are many individuals who have a great passion for indoor gardening. And there are some who have a fascination for a certain kind of plant.

There are many who like to cultivate cacti while others have a soft corner for all kinds of tropical plants. Whatever your interest is in, you just have to ensure that you start gardening only after doing a certain amount of research on the type of the plant that you want to cultivate.

Every kind of plant needs a special kind of soil for growing and special conditions to thrive. Taking care of the individual needs of the plants is the task of a good gardener. Do your research and then order indoor gardening tools that will help you make your indoor garden resemble the environment that the plants are most comfortable in.

Natural Solutions for Controlling Pests in the Garden

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 5:04 pm
by Kent Higgins

Trying to control pests and bugs in an organic garden can be challenging, just ask an organic gardener. No matter the flora, all have their variety of insects that they attract. No plant leaf, stem and/or flower are immune.

The most time consuming yet most natural way is to inspect each leaf and flower for bugs and removing them by hand. This is not ideal if you have a large garden and obviously not a favorite method among gardeners. Thank goodness, there are other methods one can use.

Persistent control of weed growth is a step in the right direction. From the beginning of planting, especially in vegetable gardens, a large enough space for a hoe to work easily should be left between rows and seedlings. If done early on, weeds are easily taken out and are not given time to drop their seeds and attract unwanted vermin to your patch.

Certain plants used as by-standers in the garden are also deterrents. These herbs and flowers act as natural repellents and aid in controlling annoyances. Some to consider are chives, elderberry, garlic and lemon balm.

Each plant is used differently to repel. When chives are planted around rose bushes they prevent black spot and they also prevent scab, when around apple tress. Elderberry branches and leaves can be used to displace moles just by simply putting them into a mole’s hole.

The tea you make from the leaves of this same plant can also be used to fend off aphids, carrot root fly, peach tree borers, and cucumber beetles. The smell from garlic is another repellent but be careful not to plant them near other vegetables that might absorb its flavor. Scattering lemon balm leaves throughout can also repel in your backyard landscaping. Did you also know, by rubbing the crushed leaves of lemon balm you can ward off mosquitoes? These methods are all repellents that can be used in your organic garden to keep pests away.

Choosing blinds & awnings in Milton Keynes & Bedford areas

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 3:00 pm
by Yager Blinds

Ther are numerous ways of purchasing blinds and awnings in Milton Keynes and Bedford areas.

You may have an idea about which blinds you would like to purchase as well, but if not you will need advice on whether to buy vertical, roller, wooden, venetian or roman blinds for your windows.

Vertical blinds are the most popular because they offer the most flexibility and control options. You can move the louvres so that people can’t see in from certain directions and yet light can still come into your room.

The simplest blind is the humble roller blind. This is just basically a piece of fabric stuck to a barrel that you can wind up or down. You don’t really get to control any light though. Roller blinds are still very common and account for about 20% of all blinds sold.

If you are looking for something a little more upmarket and classy then wooden venetians are the way to go. They offer good control of light and give a room a warm feel. They are now available in cut down options which makes the price much more realistic. Beware of putting them in kitchens and bathrooms though because wood will warp. It is a natural product and this can’t be helped.

Onto where to buy blinds. If you are in Milton Keynes, Flitwick or Ampthill areas then there are plenty of outlets that supply blinds at set sizes. Some people go for this option because they expect the blinds to be cheaper but let’s look more into this. First of all you give up half a day at least going to all of the outlets selling these types of blinds. You will then spend half a day fitting it unless you are experienced at this kind of work. You are likely to have compromised on colour because they aren’t made for you; they have to be held in stock. I can’t speak for them all but as the blinds are mass produced to sell at a price, the quality is often poor, and you certainly will have compromised on how well the blind fits because it isn’t made to measure. You will either have gaps or will have to spend an hour or two cutting the blind to size.

Buying blinds online these days can be risky, as many companies have been set up out of a spare room to cash in. They can be poor quality products because you don’t get to see any samples before you buy. You also will have to fit the blinds yourself.

We can recommend the following suppliers as they offer a complete service and pass on the savings they make by not renting shops. Blind Inspirations cover all of Hertfordshire, and Yager Blinds cover Milton Keynes and most of Buckinghamshire. We personally have dealt with both companies and were delighted.

Buying Used Digital Cameras

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 2:29 pm
by Gary Pearson

Digital photography is very popular, but buying a quality digital can be a very expensive endeavor. My first digital was very cheap, and it didn?t work well at all. It was good for taking snapshots outside in the bright sunlight, but that was about it. I took it to a concert once and never bothered to take it again. The pictures were horrible. I know have a better camera, but it did cost me a lot of money. If you want something that works well, but you don?t have a lot of cash to spare, you might consider getting a used digital camera.

One place where you can search for used digital camera in the internet is eBay. They have many different kinds of models there and you may just find what you are looking for. However you might have to attend a few auctions before you are given the model of your choice at the price that you have quoted. Even if you get outbid, you are sure to find one that is priced reasonably enough to enable you to purchase it. There are a number of models that are available and you would definitely find the one that you are looking for.

You should check the used digital camera before you bid on it. It is good to read everything that the seller has listed about the camera. You should know what the reason is for the seller selling the camera at such cheap prices.

If you read through the description of the used digital camera, you may find that there is something wrong with it. It might be ok if you know you can get it fixed, but you don?t want to buy something defective if you don?t want the added expense of getting it fixed.

It is in your best interest to pay for any used digital camera you may find on eBay through Paypal or with a credit card. That way you can get your money back if the item is not as described or has more problems than the seller alerted you to before you bid. As long as you do your research, you should be able to find a quality used digital camera that is perfect for you. Just take your time and don?t get too excited or you may spend more than you wanted to.

What You Didn’t Know About Hair Weaves

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 4:40 am
by Marquetta Breslin

A woman can define herself in a lot of ways. The clothes she wears, her walk, and her attitude are all attributes of a woman’s personality. One of the most popular ways that a woman can enhance her natural beauty is with the application of a hair weave, also known as extensions, or ‘hair integration’.

A lot of women may shy away from hair weaves because they are scared their weave will turn out like a style from the 1960s. If you’ve ever seen these horrid weaves, you know that they often looked fake and never blended properly with the natural hair. But today, hair-weaving techniques have become so advanced that even short styles like pixie cuts, bobs, and other chin-length styles look great when enhanced with a weave!

Today’s advanced techniques for weaving hair give you more choices and options to get the style you want. There are two basic types of extension hair used in hair weaves: human hair and synthetic hair. Human hair is the obvious choice because of its quality and appearance. However, you can now find natural-looking synthetic hair that can be styled with heated styling tools.

When you have chosen your hair type, it’s time to select the hair weaving method you prefer. Hair weaving can be summed up into three basic methods: sewn-in weaves, bonded weaves, and fusion. Fusion uses melted wax pebbles to attach the extension hair to your natural hair, and bonded hair weaves use a form of adhesive or glue. The sewn-in method is the safest on your hair, because it does not contain any chemicals that could damage your natural hair.

Here are four important facts to keep in mind when it comes to hair weaves:

1. Always visit your stylist bi-weekly to ensure your hair and scalp are being properly maintained.

2. A hair weave needs tightening or reattaching throughout its lifetime. This is because a weave is blended with your natural hair, and natural hair grows. Make sure to check with your stylist for specific instructions on caring for your new hair weave.

3. Wait at least two weeks before washing your hair after you get a hair weave. This will give the weave ample time to set.

4. Replacing your cotton pillowcase with one made of satin or silk will reduce rubbing while you sleep and keep your hair weave from losing its shine.

You may get so busy maintaining your weave that you unconsciously neglect your scalp. An unhealthy scalp can lead to skin irritation and other conditions. That is why it’s important to wash and condition your hair regularly, and use a crme-based moisturizer to combat dryness. Before doing this, however; consult your stylist, since the weave method they use may not stand up to washing or conditioning. A good example of this would be a bonded weave.

Since there are many factors involved with the various weaving techniques, the price can vary greatly depending on your location, the type and length of extension hair you use, and the method for applying the weave. You should expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $1,500.

Hair weaves usually last anywhere from six to eight weeks if completed and maintained properly.
