How to Create Your Own Wine Bottle Label

Monday 18 August 2008 @ 3:27 pm
by Deborah Fowler

Creating personalized wine bottle labels can be a fun activity. There are a few things that you are going to want to think about when you are creating personalized wine bottle labels. The first is to consider why you are creating these labels. Is it a particular event or do you just want something to be able to have for house warming gifts, hostess or host gifts, or for any type of quick special occasion.

Some people simply want to be able to present wine in their own labels. The majority of the time personal wine labels are going to be on wine you have made yourself. There are a number of countries that allow people to create their own wine using their homes. Please check with local laws before attempting this process.

When creating a personal label remember to place all legal warnings on the label. Alcohol content is also a good idea if you know the content as well as a list of ingredients. Wine does not have to be made out of grapes so include what type of wine it is. It is also important to include the year that the wine was made. If you make wine regularly, such as several times a year include the season as well for a more personal touch.

It is also necessary to create a moniker for your wine and to decide what additional information should reside on the label. Alternatively the remainder of the label can display an artful graphic or any other element that strikes your fancy.

Be sure to know exactly how your labels will look before you beginning mass production in order to avoid having to reprint them and waste your money. To accomplish the printing you can either do it yourself with a computer, printer, and some adhesive paper or you can have professionally printed at any print shop.

With your labels finished printing it is now time to apply them to each bottle. While this may not be the most fun part of the whole process many find it rewarding because they may be putting there final touches on a item which have put a lot of work into, and will be giving to love ones. When applying the label to the bottles you want to be sure that the bottle is clean so that the adhesive firmly stays, and you want to be careful applying the label so that it upright and not leaned to either side. To help you with this step, there have been tools design to help those new to applying labels. Now take what you have learned in this guide and start creating your very own personal bottle labels.

Restore RC Nitro Piston to Liner Fit

Friday 15 August 2008 @ 12:29 pm
by Marten (Marty) Davis

When your piston to liner fit becomes sloppy with a poor fit, it is EASY to refit the piston to the liner. Buy yourself a VERY GOOD tubing cutter from Sears ( http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00951691000P?vName=Tools ) about $32.00. That purchase will be a once in a lifetime purchase that you will use it over and over. Don’t ever ever ever ever use this cutter for anything else. The wheel that comes with the cutter will last almost indefinitely, but you might pick up a pack of spares. Keeping the cutter razor sharp is critical.

OK, how to use this tool.

Almost all nitro rc pistons have an oil groove at the top of the piston. It is usually VERY NEAR the top of the piston. If the piston does not have an oil groove, it is easy to make one with the tube cutter. The cutter will EXTRUDE the aluminum in the oil groove making the piston tighter in the liner. It is CRITICAL to be very careful here not to get the piston too tight. You want to push the piston up into the liner and when it stops, look into the exhaust port and see the wrist pin in the MIDDLE of the exhaust port window. This is exactly how tight you want the piston to fit. This re-fit of the nirto rc piston can be done over and over. The fit will go away quicker than if the piston was perfect to start with, but this method will recover a loose fitting piston/liner.

Perfect Fitting of the Piston of an RC Nitro Engine

Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 1:36 pm
by Marten (Marty) Davis

FITTING THE PISTON of a Nitro RC Race Engine:

A nitro rc engine must have the piston as round as the liner. Here are 2 effective ways to make the piston round.

1. Lapping the piston to the liner with 1200 grit non-imbedding garnet. Be careful and only do a slight amount of lapping so you don’t eliminate the proper tightness and fit of the liner/piston.

2. The other BEST WAY to make the piston round, is to use a Helical Lap. There are only a few people I know who have this capability. If you are interested in having your liner and piston fit, write to me at fit@rcboat.com and it will be automatically re-directed to Norm Doerr who has all of the helical laps that I used to own. He can also sell you a small quantity of the Non-Imbedding Garnet Lapping Compound.

NOTE: NO AMOUNT of running in of an engine will assure you of a perfect liner/piston fit. It possibly might happen, but doesn’t over 80%+ (I guessed at the percentage, it might be over 95%+) of the time. You might get a good engine by running it in, but you will get a SUPERB DOMINATING ENGINE by following these guidelines.

I helped build 3 engines for a close friend who wanted to try to qualify for the RC 1/8 Car World Championships held in Indy a LONG time ago. He made the A Main. The Engine Analysis Software was the basis for this engine build.

The liner to the Crankcase fit is also very important. The liner should be placed into the crankcase so that the fit is not forced but a snug slip fit. If the liner does not slip in and out of the case smoothly, you should LIGHTLY lap the liner to the case. The underside lip on the liner should also be lapped to the top of the case so that there is no distortion when you tighten down the head.

I use non-imbedding garnet as a lapping compound which is 1200 grit (available from the above e-mail address). You should have a little bit of this compound to use for MANY applications in our hobby.

Correctly fitting the head button into the liner is also super important. On some engines the machining cutter leaves a radius where the head button fits into the liner so as to spread the top of the liner when tightened.

BE SURE NOT TO LAP THE PART OF THE HEAD BUTTON THAT STICKS INTO THE LINER - ONLY LAP THE PART THAT STRIKES THE TOP FLANGE OF THE LINER.

You should put a VERY SMALL AMOUNT of Dow Corning Silicone #738 RTV around the liner and under the lip of the liner when placed into the engine crankcase. This material is white and does not harden. It semi-hardens and seals. I apply a VERY VERY SMALL amount to the underside of the liner top flange to contact the case and form a seal of the liner to the case. This will not allow any crankcase pressure to escape from under this flange.

I am making the assumption that I don’t have to tell you to use a toothbrush, lots of water, and dishwashing detergent to clean off the Garnet Lapping Compound and any dirt and residue from all parts, BEFORE assembling the engine.

THIS PRICEDURE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF BUILDING ANY NITRO PERFORMANCE MODEL ENGINE - PERIOD !!!!

Testing the Fit of a Nitro RC Race Engine

Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 7:14 am
by Marten (Marty) Davis

How to Test THE FIT of a Nitro RC Racing Engine:

25 years ago, a very accomplished model boater told me of a way he tested his engines to determine if they had The Perfect Fit. Since he was by far, the BEST MODELER at that time, I listened.

Following is that secret to the way to test the fit of the piston/liner, to see if you have a great fit and seal.

I assemble the finished engine. I apply a drop of “silicone platelets” to the piston surface on initial assembly. You can get this at Boca Bearings as (Midas Touch Lubricant). I turn the engine over several times to coat the piston and imbed the Teflon Platelets in the piston. I put a little bit of methanol in the engine to clean out most of the oil residue.

I put in the Glo Plug into the engine. I check the seal of the liner and piston by rocking the engine back and forth over top dead center. If you can’t rock it back and forth over top dead center without loosing the seal between the liner and piston leaking down, for at least 20 bumps, you don’t have a great fit.

After you find that you have an engine with the great fit, run the engine in your model. Get it VERY WARM for a short period of time. Then run the engine rich for a short period, then run VERY WARM, etc. Several cycles like this will allow the metal of the piston and liner to find their set and you should have a GREAT ENGINE.

Re-try the bump test AFTER you run in the engine to make sure that the seal lasts.

Testing the seal of the engine in this way, will be one of the best tips you will ever learn and will accurately predict the success of your engine build.

The fit is “Far More Important” than any timing numbers or ANYTHING ELSE, and will be your primary indicator of great performance.

This test takes into consideration the liner/piston roundness, the seal of the liner to the case, and the seal of the head to the liner.

YOU HAVE JUST RECEIVED THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP IN BUILDING ANY NITRO PERFORMANCE MODEL ENGINE !!!!

Want To Try Something New? Give A White Water Rafting Trip A Go!

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 11:01 am
by Marat Wood

Out of all the sports out there, white water rafting is quite probably the one which offers the most excitement for the average person and the great thing is it also offers the chance to be at one with nature for those nature loving folks.

A couple of things worth knowing about white water rafting

Although white water rafting is deemed an extreme sport, it doesn’t have to be so extreme if that’s not what you’re looking for. Lots of people also participate in white water rafting as a rather adventurous way of sightseeing!

White water rafting down the Grand Canyon for instance can provide views of the cliffs that can only be seen from the river you are rafting down.

However, even if you’re just taking on a very easy and pleasant part of a river, the truth remains that, if you are not properly prepared white water rafting can be dangerous, so there are definitely things you should know first.

White water rafting can be very fun and fulfilling, but it can also be dangerous. Just like any other extreme sport, no one can simply just start participating in it without the proper training and the guidance of instructors, for that reason you should do some research to find the best training sources.

When talking to your travel agent question them about the white water rafting installations that exist at your destination and make 100% certain that the white water rafting trainers there have the correct certificates.

A number of things will be explained to you in order for you to participate in white water rafting for the first time. The first thing you’ll be taught will be how to use the safety equipment, your life jacket etc.

Remember white water rafting is a team sport, so one of the very first thinks you will have to learn will be how to maneuver the raft in time with the rest of your team.

Once your team have been shown where to sit inside the raft, you will be instructed how to shift your weight when going over the rapids. You will also of cause be told what not to do while you are in the raft.

In terms of things not to do, one is to never lean into the middle of the raft at any time, since doing so could cause a clash of heads. Your guide will dedicate some time to explaining how to use your life jacket and other safety gear and of course what to do if you fall out of the raft.

Naturally it is essential to be able to swim if you intend to practice white water rafting, so if this is an area you need to improve on you should do this first.

White water rafting for me is pretty much the most exciting sport out there. As long as you prepare yourself correctly for the adventure, it will be an adventure you will never forget.

Functional Decorative Bird Houses

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 7:18 am
by Doug Pearson

A decorative bird house can be a great ornament in a garden, porch or patio. Even the beautiful bird houses are a perfect and well-suited home for nesting. You can select from a huge variety of designs and colors, to pick a bird house that will fit in beautifully with your garden.

These bird houses are available at most of the garden stores or can be purchased online. The number of styles that bird houses come in is staggering and you will be able to easily find them online.

There are a few things that are important to look for when shopping for bird houses. It is necessary that the bird house is made of a natural material like wood. It should be free of pests and should not be chemically treated. Also, make sure that any paint used is water-based paint. Great design and architecture sometimes are detrimental to important factors.

Most of these issues will be taken care of if you are going for a fully functional bird house.

The next issue will be where to place the bird house. When people install a bird house at a spot that they like, they are often making a mistake. Having a bird house right next to your porch might make it look wonderful, but it will not attract any birds because of it’s location. You will need to decide as to whether you want to have a bird house to accentuate your home, or for birds to nest.

If attracting birds is your goal, then place it where it will have the best outcome. Proper bird house placement really depends upon the type of bird. A house placed in a forested area will attract birds such as Woodpeckers and Owls. In contrast, a bird house placed in a field or other open area will attract species such as Bluebirds and Swallows. If the bird house is facing a stream or a lake, it will be loved by birds that are attracted to water like ducks. Purple Martins are attracted to this as well. If you place a bird house near a forest, it may attract Titmice, Nuthatches, Kestrels, Flycatchers and Chickadees. Finches will live in your garden if an appropriate house is provided.

Before placing multiple bird houses, think about the territory habits of each bird type. Some birds are territorial and don’t allow other birds inside their territory. Because of this, if bird houses are installed too close to one another, only one may become used. Before placing the bird houses, read up on the usual habitat for each kind of bird.

When there is a proper food source, birds will feel welcome. When a bird has sufficient food to feed their young they will feel invited to stay and raise their families, so consider adding a few bird feeders around your new decorative bird houses.

Using Leather Dyes and Finishes

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 9:38 pm
by Ethan O. Tanner

Dyeing leather is an art, not a science. Variations in materials, conditions and artist touch will have a direct effect on the result. Fiebing Leather Dyes and most alcohol based dyes may be combined and mixed to achieve intermediate colors and tones. In most cases the basic rules of color mixing apply. By mixing your leather dyes, it is not necessary to carry so many colors, but yet you may achieve your desired color shade.

Common examples of mixing leather dyes are: Yellow and Blue = shades of Green, Yellow and Red = shades of Orange and Red, Red and Blue = shades of deep Purple to Lavender, Red and Purple = Wine, Brown and Yellow = shades of Golden Brown and Tan, Brown and Red = shades of Maroon.

Tip: Do not attempt to mix Fiebing’s White Leather Dye or Fiebing’s Grey Leather Dye. White and Grey are not compatible for mixing with the other dye colors. Mixing of various leather dyes will add an additional color variation to your leather craft Project. Be sure to test your color mixes before dying your entire project.

Fiebing’s Acrylic Resolene is a thin acrylic top finish that will give your project a medium shine and will provide some water resistance. It is very versatile as it can be applied as a top finish over all types of leather dressings from dyes to antiques. Since Resolene is an acrylic finish, it is applied in light coats so as to not build up too much. The result is a tough but very flexible finish that should last for a long time.

Resolene is best applied with a damp sponge. Apply a light coat using circular motions to avoid streaks. If you apply too heavily, you may experience bubbling which will pop and form rings once dry. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying your next coat. Resolene will occasionally look blue when wet but will dry clear so do not panic.

For a softer finish on your leather projects Leather Balm is an perfect choice. It is a specially formulated Liquid Wax for coloring, softening and polishing articles of smooth leather. It can be furbished to a rich soft, velvety luster. Leather balm with atom wax is not a water resistant top finish. It will protect your leather projects with a soft durable waxy finish for a natural Leather Look.

Edge enamel is a very fine product for having the edges of your leather project look finished and complete. Most edge enamels contain a waxy compound, and after you apply the edge enamel to your project, you should strop the edges. Crafters often use a nylon edging wheel or a canvass cloth for stropping belts.

The most practiced method for dyeing and finishing your leather project is hands on crafting. Learn to mix dyes, experiment with finishes and you are on your way to making fine leather products. One will feel a sense of real pride, accomplishment and satisfaction in creating a quality leather project.
