How To Come Up With Creative Halloween Decorations

Tuesday 19 August 2008 @ 7:43 am
by Phil Sikes

If you have children, Halloween is a great excuse to have some family fun together. It’s an opportunity to dress up the whole family in weird and frightening costumes; and to decorate your normally peaceful home in the out-of-this-world Halloween theme, turning it into a scary haunted house to the delight of your children.

The fun starts each year as Halloween approaches when the family gets together to open all your boxes of decorations that have been stored away from last year. Hairy spiders and their sticky webs, flying witches on broomsticks, vampire teeth, ghosts, ghouls, and all the other great Halloween details are sure to delight children.

You would think it would frighten them, but children take great delight helping put up the the haunting and eerie decorations that go with Halloween.

Every individual and family has their own unique way of celebrating Halloween. If they are just uninterested or too busy, they might not celebrate the holiday at all. Others choose to take a simple approach to their festivities, using nothing more than a lonely Jack-o-Lantern to decorate their home.

On the flip side, there are also plenty of people who do everything possible to transform their homes and yards into a terrifying scene. Complete with zombies, bats, spiders, spider webs, vampires, tombstones, flashes of lightning, fog, and sound effects, such decorating may seem a bit extreme but is still fun. Many people leave decorations on a more subdued level, simply making their doorway a bit frightening for the trick-or-treaters that visit the home.

Your family can enjoy some great Halloween fun simply by going for a drive around the neighborhood as dusk falls. In the last few days leading up to the October 31st celebration, you are sure to see the frightening fruit of much effort decorating local homes.

As kids notice which homes are most extensively decorated, their minds are sure to turn to trick-or-treating. They will be working hard to figure out what costume they will wear and which houses are most likely to give out the best candy.

Some neighbors might really go all out, decorating the insides of their homes and inviting people in to take a tour their haunted house. Often the proceeds for such tours goes to charity, so finding a place such as this in your neighborhood could be another source of Halloween fun.

Halloween Costume Inspiration

Saturday 16 August 2008 @ 5:05 am
by Phil Sikes

Halloween is traditionally about the fabled creatures of the underworld and the spirits that are said to inhabit that mysterious world between the living and the dead. Ghosts, Ghouls, Zombies, The Grim Reaper and Spirits take many forms in the imagination, and have inspired endless costume variations on what you can do with an old white sheet and a pair of scissors. That imagination has started to run out after all these years, and Halloween enthusiasts have looked for fresh inspiration for their choice of costume.

Witches, wizards, goblins and other mostly evil characters of the fairy story world have long inspired another range of Halloween costumes. Disney fairy story film costume designs have been a popular inspiration for Halloween costumes, such as, to pick just one, the high collared dress of the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Endless sources of inspiration have been found in numerous other movies and a long and rich history of fairy story book illustration.

The elegant tuxedo, long cape, and blood-dripping fangs of Count Dracula have led to many costume ideas, and not just for men. Female vampires often appear during Halloween in fancy, old fashioned gowns and, with the right accessories, they can be quite terrifying. You can get ideas for Halloween costumes from any horror film. The Addam’s Family was also full of great horror film related ideas. You can choose to be a neck bolted Frankenstein, a hairy werewolf, a blood-lusting vampire, or any other monster that suits you.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Harry Potter, Pirates of The Caribbean and Spider Man series of movies, have added a strong selection of imaginative characters from that magical world just beyond the physical world that we know.

For kids who have grown up watching such movies, costumes related to them are instantly recognizable. It is truly exciting to see the film come to life. This is possible because the Halloween costumes for such characters are basically a copy of the original studio costume used during the filming of the movie.

Halloween costumes tend to be related to monsters and spirits from the underworld, but they don’t have to be. Every year, more and more people choose to dress up in an effort to make other people laugh, not scream.

Lots of inspiration exists outside the spirit realm. Characters from television shows, movies, and books, like Superman for example, have become popular Halloween guises. Other more random characters such as scarecrows and clowns are also common. You could choose a stereotypical person, like a geeky nerd, or even an inanimate object, like a soda can. The possibilities are essentially endless.

The most important thing to remember about your Halloween costume is that it should be clever and stand out from the crowd. While trick-or-treaters may still be working hard to scare the candy out of their neighbors, older kids and adults will surely want to wow their friends with an unexpectedly interesting costume at this year’s Halloween party.

Finding a Unique Halloween Costume

Friday 15 August 2008 @ 12:11 pm
by Phil Sikes

A hugely popular and very important part of the year’s social activities, Halloween parties are fun filled, costumed events. Trying to decide just what costume you are going to wear to the party, however, tends to be a little less fun and much more frustrating than actually attending.

There are certain themes that keep repeating themselves. You can rest assured there will be several people dressed like Caspar the Ghost, quite a few dressed as Count Dracula and his long fanged Gothic lady friends, a number of witches and a few other outfits that everybody thinks of first. Or is it just that these are the outfits the costume hire company stocks in bulk?

To be distinctive, you could set out to design and make a completely different costume from scratch. However, most people don’t have the time, money, imagination or inclination to go to that bother. Some find the answer to standing out in the crowd is to do something radically different, even outrageous, by showing up in a costume that has little if anything to do with Halloween.

Costumes that are controversial, clever, or daring are sure to stand out from the rest of the more conservative outfits. Some people probably would not feel comfortable wearing such an interesting get up, but with just a little bit of confidence and poise it can be done successfully.

You can make your costume unique and interesting by simply using a clever conversation starter that relates to your outfit somehow. If you like, you could even choose to make fellow party goers laugh with a short, funny story to go with your Halloween disguise.

Let’s take an example. Instead of going as a ghost, go as one of the Ghost Buster movie characters, and work the room meeting all the ghosts with the line you are there to bust them. Soon everyone will know you are there at the party.

If you go as a group, coordinate your costumes and show up, for example, as the Adams Family. It gives you an excuse to ham it up with each other. You won’t be the first to use that costume, but people will notice all of you and want to talk about your distinctive united approach.

If, when you go to buy a costume, the only one left is the all too common Dracula, you can still mix it up and make it your own. For example, you could opt to wear Dracula’s classic tuxedo top, but change the pants to golf pants and tell everyone at the party you are Dracula on vacation. This is sure to attract someone who loves golf and lots of curious party guests.

Halloween Party Decoration Ideas

Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 5:39 am
by Phil Sikes

Your Halloween party decorations will probably include the standard range of items, but there are some simple little extra tricks you can easily add that will add a scary surprise, and give your guests a chilling fright and cause a few screams.

No good Halloween party could be void of spooky, creepy, candlelit, carved Jack-O-Lanterns spreading eerily dim lighting throughout the room. You can also buy ghostly glowing images to hang up in strategic locations and add imitation spider web or goassmer cloth to walls. Either one will create a scary haunted house feel to your party.

Suspending decoration items like bats, flying witches on broom sticks, large hairy spiders, balloons with ghostly faces, skeletons and the like from the ceiling, down to to face level, will have your guests dodging around among these horrors in the flickering candle light, and always on the lookout for their next fright. Distributing plastic spiders and other shocking surprises around where people sit, or on tables among the drinks and plates, will help to keep your guests on edge.

To make party goers feel a creepy ghostly presence in the room, you can attach lots of thin, darkly colored string from the ceiling. Make sure they can’t be seen. That way, people will walk into them and feel something strange touching them without being able to see what it is, which might even win you a few terrified screams.

The unexpected is often quite scary. Set up some frightening pictures and other decorations that are placed in front of timed lights. When these scary scenes are suddenly illuminated, or better yet, combined with loud, frightening sound effects, everybody will be surprised enough to jump out of their seat. If you invite a more adult crowd, your lights could reveal a headless corpse hanging in the darkness.

Combining good lighting effects with a fog machine can really make things creepy. To make the effect authentic, hide the fog machine behind some cleverly placed tombstones or other decorations.

Another great touch can be a horror movie. Just put on an especially scary film on a big screen TV and let it play quietly in the background. It will add a chilling touch to your party.

Before the party really gets going, you can use frightening music and sound effects with some classic Halloween tracks like the Monster Mash to set the mood. When things pick up and dancing starts, you can still throw in some scary sounds here and there to maintain your spooky atmosphere throughout the evening.

Finding The Right Halloween Costume

Wednesday 13 August 2008 @ 9:53 am
by Phil Sikes

If you’re going to have a great Halloween, you’ll want to have a theme in mind. Are you thinking of something glamorous? Scary? Sexy? You might even be planning to go to more than one party, and want a different type of costume for each one.

The location of the party has a lot to do with your choice. Office parties usually call for more modest costumes, while your best friend will probably be expecting you to go all out for his party.

After choosing a theme for your costume, head to your local costume shop and make it happen.

You will have to decide to rent or outright purchase your costume. Normally, it is not difficult to find a well priced costume. Looking on the Internet, you can usually find a great costume at a great price. While renting is efficient, since you might not want to wear the same costume every Halloween, finding a good price may make it just as cost effective to buy one.

Impressive costumes really always come down to the small details. If you’re hoping that people won’t recognize you when you arrive at the party, the details are critical.

For example, consider a monster mask that’s really creepy. Adding some authentic theatrical makeup will give the costume a terrifying edge that will keep your identity a secret.

When deciding where to buy your costume, be it on the Internet or in a local shop, make sure the store offers everything you will need to make your costume perfect, just the way you want it. If a shop doesn’t have the items you want, keep looking.

You’ll want to choose a shop that not only offers the costume itself, but all the makeup and other accessories you want to complete your disguise. Going the extra distance will make for a more complete costume, and you’ll be a lot happier with the results.

History of Halloween

Wednesday 13 August 2008 @ 5:53 am
by Phil Sikes

Halloween, which falls each year on October 31st, is a holiday rich with tradition. In modern times, the celebration has come to include lots of frightening fun, like touring haunted houses, attending costume parties, and watching horror movies. Kids can be seen each and every Halloween donning costumes of Dracula, werewolves, witches, ghosts, and the like, trick-or-treating from door to door for candy and other goodies.

Halloween began as an ancient Celtic festival in Great Britain and Ireland, and has survived most strongly among Irish, Scottish and Welsh communities. Immigrants from these communities carried the tradition to North America where it has gained in popularity. In turn, as part of American pop culture, Halloween has spread in popularity to most corners of the English speaking western world, and increasingly into Western Europe in recent times.

Halloween began as a festival devoted to the link between the living and dead that was celebrated by pagans. The date of the celebration corresponded to the time when the supposed connection between the spirit and physical worlds was strongest and thus supernatural events most commonly occurred. These celebrations eventually came to be called Halloween when the growing Christian church made its activities part of All Hallows Day, also known as All Saint’s Day, a holiday who’s Gregorian calendar date was November 1.

On the evening of October 31, All Hallows Evening, a vigil was held for the following day’s celebrations. All Hallows Evening was eventually referred to as Hallowe’en and finally the Halloween that is celebrated throughout the world.

The celebration of Halloween survived most strongly in Ireland. It was an end of summer festival, and was often celebrated in each community with a bonfire to ward off the evil spirits. Children would go from door to door in disguise as creatures from the underworld to collect treats, mainly fruit, nuts and the like for the festivities.

Foods that the children collected were made a part of games like bobbing for apples and other assorted items or eating apples on a string. Turnips were used to hold candles after having scary ghostly faces carved into them. This lead to the pumpkin carving that has become so popular in America. Kids were also dusted with salt in order to protect them from wicked spirits.

There is no exact explanation of how the trickery of trick-or-treating arose, but it did so in North America. Children in Ireland often did mischievous things during Halloween that would later be blamed on the bad spirits. It seems that this tradition was merged with that of collecting treats.

Kids usually played innocent and clever tricks on adults they didn’t like so much, putting commonly used objects of theirs where they couldn’t be found on the night of Halloween.

How A Woman with Illness Can Romance Her Husband

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 9:48 pm
by Lisa Copen

The words “hot and bothered” may spark images of twisted sheets and breathlessly reaching out to the one you love for most people. But if you have a chronic illness, “hot” likely refers to a thyroid condition, night sweats, or a heating pad on high. “Bothered” is everything else that happens in bed. Like achy joints that pop when you roll over, a cat that insists on sleeping on your leg, or a spouse who snores through thunder and lightening. Romance may be hard to find in your home!

Nearly 1 in 2 people live with a chronic illness in the U.S. which means that a lot of marriages are disrupted by this uninvited third party of illness, often including mental illness as well. Seventy-five percent of marriages end in divorce. But romantic ideas don’t have to be used just on Valentine’s Day.

So! How do you get the spark back? Here are some creative romantic gift ideas and ways to say, “I love you.”

You have to give it your best effort and avoid excuses. “I’m so tired and had such a hard day. I feel terrible.” I’ve said them all so I understand. Unfortunately the circumstances won’t likely change, so you have to change your attitude in order to have the benefit of getting to the joy of romance. Let yourself relax and push past the pain and see if you can forget a good chunk of it. Distraction can be a wonderful thing.

Make romance a priority in your house! Rather than cleaning your house all day and mopping those floors, take a nap so that you have some quality time with your spouse that night. Make sure he feels valued and important and not just “one more thing to take care of.”

Do whatever it takes to be enthusiastic for your romantic evening. If you go out for a nice dinner, don’t tell him over the menu, “I actually feel pretty sick, so I don’t know what to eat. I really am going out just as a favor for you.” (That’s won’t turn your loved one on in the least!) Even if your romance is just dinner out, enjoy talking about some dreams you still have or what your hopes are for the future. Avoid talking about your illness or how it could change them all at the drop of a hat.

You don’t have to write romantic love poems. Just put together a mini-album of your favorite photos and include notes about your memories and how much he means to you.

Think of all of the thing you notice your spouse does that is never done with complaint and write them down with a bit thank you at the bottom. Does he take out the garbage, get you medicine in the middle of the night, bathe your child without complaint, or even clean out the litter box? Write these out or type tehm in fun fonts as something for him to treasure.

Women, let’s get real. Regardless of your weight, get over feeling self-conscious and buy some underwear from a store that doesn’t also sell tires.

Learn to text message with your phone and send him a messge that says something out of character for you. Be outrageously romantic, just make sure you send it to the right person in your phone book!

Give him a home-made coupon for something he would like but doesn’t splurge on very often such as, “Good for 5 guilt-free hours with your friends watching football.” Avoid making him feel guilty whenever he wants to do something you can participate in (like going hiking or riding a roller coaster.)

Perfect marriages will never exist, but a even a marriage that has an illness can be a huge blessing and not just a state of survival. Romance comes in many ways. I remember loving my husband more than ever the night I couldn’t not move because of a rheumatoid arthritis flare. I “slept” sitting on the couch and he spent the night on the floor beside the couch to comfort me every time I screamed from the pain.

Love is complicated and can come in many forms. One of the books I’ve bought all the couples in my life is “Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately Needs” by Emerson Eggerichs. It talks a lot about “love languages.” For example, men feel loved when they feel respected, while women want to feel loved with emotions and communication. A lot of times we are giving our spouse what we desire rather than the “love language” they most need. Being aware of all of the small ways we can show each other love and respect will add up to romance the whole year through.

When Your Wife is Ill and Romance Ain’t Happening

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 8:28 pm
by Lisa Copen

When your wife has a chronic illness, though you may love her no matter what, it can be hard for her to get into a romantic mood. Physical pain from the actual illness to weight gain or loss, bloating, and less-than-fun symptoms of medication can all be a deterrent to some romantic moments.

Be assured that you are not alone. Nearly 1 in 2 people in the USA live with a chronic illness and so many marriages are impacted. Unfortunately, nearly seventy-five percent of them end in divorce when an illness is that “third party” in the marriage.

So! Can you get the spark back? Yes! Here are some creative romantic gift ideas and ways to say, “I love you.”

Go ahead and buy her that box of chocolate, but if she is watching her weight, don’t ruin her diet. Instead find some Russell Stover’s sugar free chocolate at your local Target or even the pharmacy. Chocolate, along with coconut, pecans, and many more, all contain phenyl ethylamine, a chemical that produces the feeling of “being in love.” Good place to start, don’t you think?

Be affectionate by simply reaching for her hand. Yes, I know you’re hoping for more than holding hands, but if she’s in physical pain it’s going to take some real romance on your part to distract her from pain and get her refocused on you. Rub her back (gently!), cuddle, snuggle and don’t pressure her for more. Pretty soon she’ll be reaching out to you.

Pour out your heart about how much you admire the strength she shows in the darkest moments. Let her know you know that living with illness is difficult and that you are blessed to be married to someone with so much character and joy. Remind her that you love her and are in it “in sickness and in health.”

Buy her something she wouldn’t buy herself like a $20 bottle of lotion, a CD she’s mentioned or a rocking chair for the patio. What is something that she could enjoy when she isn’t feeling well? Pamper her.

Schedule a day of rest for her. Get the kids out of the house, give her a new pair of pjs, and let her know she has he day to do whatever she wants.

Hide romantic notes in places she will find them. Stick a note in the fridge that says, “I know it’s hard for you to go grocery shopping. Please know how much it means to me that you keep this box stocked just for me!”

Being romantic at home isn’t hard. Purchase a fondue pot and tell her that you will bring home something to dip every Wednesday night so you two can sit and have a conversation over candlelight (and cheese, chocolate, marshmallow, etc.)

Don’t know how to start a conversation that can lead to romance? There are loads of books about “conversation starters” and most have a romantic version. “Red Hot Monogamy” by Bill and Pam Farrell is also a good book to read to gain some ideas.

Let her know that you know atmosphere is important. Send her in to take a bath and light some of the new flameless candles (you can go to sleep without worry). Make up a play list of her favorite romantic songs on your ipod. Get goofy and throw some rose petals around and see how she responds.

Every woman is different and has different needs, so be sure to communicate to her your desire to increase the romance and ask for her input. Ask, “What are you most worried about? What can I do to make life easier for you? What can I do that would let you know how much I love you?”

The good news is that perfection is not a requirement. Just by making the effort to increase the romance in the relationship will score you some big points. And she may not let you even have a chance to finish reading that book on romancing your wife, because if she sees you reading it, your willingness to read it may be all the romance she needs. One last piece of advice, doing the dishes or the laundry really can be the best way to your wife’s heart.
